Seeking God’s Guidance: The Power of Inquiring of the Lord

Introduction

In many traditional African societies, people often turn to spiritual priests (abosom) for answers during times of crisis. 

Even after accepting Christ, some believers struggle to break away from this practice, still seeking guidance from lesser spiritual sources instead of trusting in the all-knowing God. 

However, Scripture makes it clear that God desires His children to inquire of Him directly for wisdom, direction, and solutions to life’s challenges.

Why Seek the Creator Instead of the Created?

God is omniscient—He knows everything about our past, present, and future. If we have direct access to Him through prayer, why rely on sources that are limited in power and understanding? 

The Bible assures us that God is always listening and willing to guide those who seek Him:

"Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know" (Jeremiah 33:3, NKJV).

David’s Example: Inquiring Before Acting

David provides a powerful example of seeking God’s direction before making decisions. When the Amalekites attacked Ziklag and took his family captive, David didn’t act impulsively out of anger or grief. Instead, he sought God’s guidance:

"David inquired of the Lord, saying, 'Shall I pursue this troop? Shall I overtake them?' And He answered him, 'Pursue, for you shall surely overtake them and without fail recover all'" (1 Samuel 30:8, NKJV).

David’s decision to inquire of the Lord didn’t just bring comfort—it provided a clear path to victory. Likewise, when we ask God for wisdom, He gives us divine strategies to overcome challenges.

Fresh Guidance for Every New Battle

One of David’s most admirable qualities was his commitment to continuously seek God’s will. Even when faced with familiar challenges, he never assumed that the same approach would work. When the Philistines attacked twice, David sought fresh instruction each time:

"David inquired of the Lord again" (2 Samuel 5:23a, NIV).

This teaches us that inquiring of the Lord must be a consistent practice, not a one-time event. Yesterday’s guidance may not be today’s solution.

A Direct Statement to Remember

Being a Christian does not mean you automatically have all the answers—you must humble yourself and actively seek God’s wisdom in every situation.

An Action Plan: Making It a Daily Habit

1. Begin each day with prayer, asking God for guidance in your decisions.
2. Meditate on Scripture to align your heart with His wisdom.
3. Before making major life choices, pause and seek God’s direction through prayer and fasting.
4. Trust His response and act in obedience, knowing His plans are always for your good.

Life presents unique challenges daily, and human wisdom alone is insufficient. By making it a habit to inquire of the Lord, we open ourselves to divine strategies, fresh insights, and supernatural strength.

Trust in God’s timing and wisdom, and He will lead you step by step toward victory.
