Excerpts from the Upcoming Book “Faith Comes by Hearing” by Eric Otchere
Introduction
In Faith Comes by Hearing, I explore how believers can maximize the impact of sermons for spiritual growth. Yet, many listen to preaching week after week without experiencing transformation. Why?
Here are the top five reasons—and how to overcome them:
1. Passive Listening Without Application
"But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves." (James 1:22)
Many treat sermons like entertainment—engaging emotionally but never acting. Jesus warned that hearing without obedience is like building a house on sand (Matthew 7:26-27). The solution? Write down one actionable step after every message and follow through.
2. A Critical Spirit
"Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment." (John 7:24)
Some listen only to critique the preacher’s style, theology, or delivery. The Pharisees did this with Jesus (Luke 5:21-22), missing His miracles. Instead of asking, “Was that a good sermon?” ask, “What is God saying to me?”

3. Unprepared Hearts
"Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it." (Proverbs 4:23)
Rushing into church distracted—by phones, unresolved conflicts, or fatigue—hardens the soil of your heart (Matthew 13:19). Prepare by praying, confessing sin, and silencing distractions before service.
4. Lack of Meditation & Reflection
"Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly." (Colossians 3:16)
Many forget sermons by Monday because they don’t revisit the message. The Bereans studied Scripture daily (Acts 17:11). Journal key points, discuss them with others, and pray over them throughout the week.
5. No Accountability for Growth
"Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another." (Proverbs 27:17)
Sermons bear fruit when shared in community. Yet, many never discuss what they’ve learned. Join a small group, share takeaways with a friend, or teach someone else—this cures spiritual forgetfulness.
Conclusion: From Hearing to Transformation
Sermons are not just for inspiration—they’re for activation. If your faith isn’t growing, check your listening habits. As Jesus said, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.” (Matthew 11:15).
