15 Common Struggles That Hinder Christian Spiritual Growth (Part 1)

2–3 minutes

Introduction

Spiritual growth is not automatic—it is intentional. Yet many Christians feel stuck despite their wish to grow in faith.

In this 3-part blog series, we explore 15 common struggles that hinder personal transformation. By God’s grace, you can overcome them.

These insights will help you build a stronger prayer life, deepen your Bible study, and walk in lasting freedom.

Let’s start with the first five:

1. Inconsistent Prayer Life

A thriving Christian life begins with a strong prayer life. Prayer is our spiritual oxygen, the channel through which we connect with God. Unfortunately, many believers find it difficult to pray consistently due to busy schedules, distractions, or lack of direction.

Jesus modeled consistent prayer (Luke 5:16), reminding us that intimacy with the Father is non-negotiable for spiritual growth. Start with short, scheduled sessions and grow steadily.

2. Neglect of Bible Study

One of the greatest hindrances to Christian discipleship is the neglect of Bible study. God’s Word is our spiritual food (Matthew 4:4), yet many believers rely solely on Sunday sermons. Without regular Scripture intake, faith becomes shallow and unrooted.

Make use of Bible reading plans, devotionals, or a Bible-based church study group to ignite your passion for God’s Word.

3. Struggles with Sin and Temptation

Overcoming sin is essential for lasting spiritual maturity. Whether it’s addiction, pride, envy, or impurity, sin interrupts fellowship with God and leads to guilt and defeat. Romans 6 reminds us that sin shall no longer be our master.

Victory is possible through confession (1 John 1:9), reliance on the Holy Spirit, and Christian fellowship for accountability.

4. Unforgiveness and Bitterness

Many Christians struggle to grow spiritually because of unresolved pain and bitterness. Yet, forgiveness in Christianity is foundational.

Jesus taught that unforgiveness blocks our own prayers (Mark 11:25). Letting go is a powerful step toward healing and peace. Choose to forgive as Christ forgave you, and your spiritual life will flourish.

5. Fear and Doubt

Fear paralyzes progress. Doubting God’s love, promises, or plans is common but damaging to our faith. Dealing with fear biblically means replacing lies with truth.

Meditate on Scriptures like Isaiah 41:10 and surround yourself with those who will build your faith, not feed your fears. As your faith grows, your confidence in God’s promises will deepen.

Conclusion

These five struggles are common, but they are not final. Through intentional action, Christian discipleship, and the empowerment of the Holy Spirit, you can break free and grow in grace.

In Part 2, we’ll explore more barriers. These include isolation, laziness, and worldly distractions. Such barriers can quietly hinder your spiritual development.
