Introduction

Leaders change—but God never does. In Numbers 27, we witness a pivotal leadership transition from Moses to Joshua. Though Moses had faithfully led Israel for decades, the time came for a new leader to rise and complete the journey into the Promised Land. Yet before this significant moment, God used the boldness of five sisters to clarify a key aspect of justice and inheritance, proving that He cares about both governance and the individual.

Whether you’re leading or being led, one thing is clear: God appoints leaders to continue His work, not their own.

“God appoints leaders to continue His work, not their own.”

1. God’s Word on Inheritance for a Man Without Sons

📖 “The daughters of Zelophehad… stood before Moses… and said: Why should the name of our father be removed… because he had no son?”Numbers 27:2-4

Zelophehad’s five daughters courageously approached Moses and the leaders to request an inheritance in their father’s name. Moses took the matter to God, who responded with fairness: daughters could indeed inherit when there were no sons.

📝 Lesson: God values justice, fairness, and bold faith—even from those who may seem overlooked by society.

2. Moses’ Leadership Nears Its End

📖 “Go up… and see the land… but you also shall be gathered to your people.”Numbers 27:12-13

Despite his extraordinary service, Moses would not enter the Promised Land due to his disobedience at Meribah (Numbers 20). Yet God allowed him to see the land from afar, honoring his role.

📝 Lesson: Even great leaders face consequences, but God remains gracious and just.

3. God Chooses Joshua as the Next Leader

📖 “Take Joshua the son of Nun, a man in whom is the Spirit, and lay your hand on him.”Numbers 27:18

Moses, ever the shepherd, interceded for the people and asked God to appoint a successor. God chose Joshua—a man who had served faithfully as Moses’ assistant and walked in the Spirit.

📝 Lesson: God chooses leaders based on faithfulness and spiritual readiness, not popularity or ambition.

4. Moses Obeys God’s Command

📖 “He laid his hands on him and commissioned him.”Numbers 27:23

Moses did not resist God’s plan. Instead, he affirmed Joshua’s new role in the presence of all Israel. This public commissioning ensured unity and confidence in God’s chosen leader.

📝 Lesson: Great leaders prepare others to carry the mission forward—not just to finish their own race.

Conclusion

The transition from Moses to Joshua shows us that God’s mission is bigger than any one person. Leaders may change, but His plan remains steady. God always raises new vessels to carry forward His promises.
