In a moment of heartfelt reflection and spiritual insight, Pastor Mensa Otabil, General Overseer of the International Central Gospel Church (ICGC), has revealed the divine and humble beginnings of what has now become one of the most powerful Christian gatherings in Africa—Greater Works Conference.
Speaking during a special Living Word interview with Rev. Albert Ocran, Pastor Otabil shared that the vision for Greater Works didn’t start as a grand plan, but rather as a simple moment of obedience at the end of a fast.
“Greater Works started incidentally,” he said. “It wasn’t thought of to be a conference in the first place. We had what we called Spiritual Emphasis Month—30 days of prayer and fasting—and after that, just one meeting to close the fast.”
What happened next was unexpected—but undeniably divine.
“We realised that those closing meetings were becoming something unique of their own, so we extended them to three days. Over time, that process became an event on its own. So we purposed it to become a conference,” Pastor Otabil continued. “Now, it’s the climax of our 40 Days of Power. It just evolved—and it grew over the years.”
This revelation brings clarity to the spiritual depth and intentionality that surrounds the conference each year.
“Faith is not automatic. Believing God is not automatic. It’s something we do consciously,” Pastor Otabil explained. “This Christian life is an intentional life. When you set time apart, even tiny actions lead to something big.”
Though globally acclaimed, Greater Works remains deeply personal in its impact. For some, it’s a time of miraculous healing or breakthrough; for others, a season of renewal through worship, service, or simply being part of the body of Christ.
“The impact is not the conference itself, but in the life of people,” he noted. “My fulfillment is that what we have put out has helped people.”
What started as a single meeting has become a divine movement—a moment in time that heaven touches earth.
