Doing Greater Works: Pastor Mensa Otabil Calls Believers to Centre their Faith in Jesus

— Highlights from Greater Works 2025, Day 2 Morning Session

On Tuesday, August 5th, 2025, the Day 2 Morning Session of the Greater Works Conference at ICGC Christ Temple East, Teshie-Accra, took a deeply spiritual and theologically rich turn as Dr. Mensa Otabil, General Overseer of the International Central Gospel Church (ICGC), delivered a profound sermon on the theme “Doing Greater Works.”

Building on his message from Day 1, Pastor Otabil returned to John 14:8–14, where Jesus promises that “He who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father.”

Main Highlights of the Sermon

1. Greater Works Are Amplified Works of Christ
Pastor Otabil clarified that greater works does not mean doing things beyond what Jesus did, but rather amplifying the works of Christ to a broader audience.

“The greater works Jesus said we would do are His works, not ours… Greater means louder, amplified, declared louder.”
Jesus ministered in small circles and often avoided public attention, but He instructed His disciples to take what He taught in private and proclaim it openly.
“What I did in small places, you’re going to do in big places. What I did for individuals, you will do for nations.”

2. Believe in Jesus — Not in Substitutes
A strong theme in the message was the centrality of Jesus in the life and ministry of the believer.

“We believe in everything except Jesus… in mantles, oils, altars. But Jesus didn’t say believe in any of those — He said believe in Me.”
Otabil cautioned against misplaced faith in anointings or spiritual accessories and called believers to return to a Christ-centred faith.

3. Jesus Is the Source of All Power
He emphasized that no man of God has the power to transfer anointing, reminding the audience that even biblical examples like Elijah and Elisha only transferred what God Himself ordained.

“Men of God are stewards, not owners, of the gift. If you want the anointing, go to the Owner — Jesus Christ.”

4. Prayer Is Only Powerful When Rooted in Christ
Though affirming the importance of prayer, Pastor Otabil dismantled the idea that prayer is powerful in itself.

“Prayer is not powerful because you shouted or prayed all night. Prayer is powerful only because it is centred on Jesus.”

5. Jesus Has Finished the Work — We Enforce It

“We do the works of Jesus because Jesus did the work.”
Healing, deliverance, and miracles, he explained, are not dependent on human effort or emotional expression but on faith in Christ’s completed work on the cross.
“When I lay hands, I am only enforcing what Jesus has already done. The healing is not in my hand. It’s in what Christ finished.”

6. No Shortcut to the Power of God
Otabil warned young pastors not to chase impartations or quick fixes but to stay rooted in spiritual discipline.

“There’s no shortcut to the power of God. Submit to God, walk in holiness, serve Jesus — He will touch you.”

Conclusion: Centre Everything on Jesus

In a powerful closing moment, Pastor Otabil led the congregation in declaring their faith in Jesus:

“Jesus, I believe in You. You are the source of my faith, my power, and my victory. Because of You, I do greater works.”

This message was a call to shift focus from the sensational to the scriptural, and from performance to pure faith in Christ.
