Introduction
One of the greatest dangers of success is forgetting the One who made it possible. In Deuteronomy 8, Moses warns Israel not to forget the Lord once they enter the Promised Land.
God had delivered them from slavery in Egypt, guided them through the wilderness, and promised them a land flowing with abundance. Their future strength, wealth, and prosperity would depend entirely on Him.
This timeless lesson reminds us today that gratitude and obedience are the keys to remaining aligned with God’s purpose.
1. Remember the Lord—What He Has Done and What He Will Do (Deuteronomy 8:1-12)
Moses urged the people to reflect on God’s mighty acts: delivering them from bondage, feeding them with manna, and sustaining them in the wilderness. Remembering God’s past faithfulness strengthens faith for the future.
Scripture: “Remember how the Lord your God led you all the way in the wilderness these forty years, to humble and test you in order to know what was in your heart.” (Deuteronomy 8:2 NIV)
For us today, gratitude keeps our hearts humble. When we remember God’s goodness—His provision, healing, protection, and guidance—we remain anchored in His promises and better equipped to trust Him for tomorrow.
2. Do Not Forget God in Your Life (Deuteronomy 8:13-20)
Moses warned that prosperity could cause Israel to forget God. Abundance often tempts us to believe our own strength or wisdom secured success, leading to pride and disobedience. Forgetting God, however, brings destruction.
Scripture: “But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant.” (Deuteronomy 8:18 NIV)
Today, this warning is still relevant. In moments of abundance, we must recognize that everything comes from God. Without Him, wealth and power collapse. Remembering God in prosperity is the key to sustained blessing and protection from pride.
Conclusion
Deuteronomy 8 reminds us that every good thing we have—life, strength, success, and provision—comes from the Lord. Forgetting Him leads to pride and downfall, but remembering Him leads to gratitude, obedience, and blessing.
Take Action: Fix your gaze on God and never forget His faithfulness. Begin today by thanking Him for past victories, acknowledging Him in present blessings, and trusting Him for future breakthroughs.
