How to Treat Those Who Turn Against God

Introduction
After warning Israel about false worship in Deuteronomy 12, Moses shifts his focus in Deuteronomy 13 to the danger of apostasy—turning away from God. Apostasy is not just a personal sin; it corrupts entire communities if left unchecked.

Whether through a false prophet, a close relative, or even an entire city, Moses makes it clear that apostasy must be confronted decisively.

This chapter underscores a sobering reality: loyalty to God must come before all else.

1. Dealing with False Prophets Who Promote Apostasy (Deuteronomy 13:1-5)

Moses warns that even if a prophet performs signs or miracles, if their message leads people away from God, they are false. Miracles are never the measure of truth—God’s Word is.

Scripture: “That prophet or dreamer must be put to death for inciting rebellion against the Lord your God.” (Deuteronomy 13:5 NIV)

For us today, this is a warning against being swayed by charisma or supernatural displays that contradict God’s Word. True prophecy always points to obedience to God, never away from Him.

2. Dealing with Family Members Who Turn to Apostasy (Deuteronomy 13:6-11)

Moses raises the stakes further: what if it is a loved one who entices you to follow false gods? Israel was commanded to put loyalty to God above even the closest family ties.

Scripture: “If your very own brother, or your son or daughter, or the wife you love, or your closest friend secretly entices you… do not yield to them.” (Deuteronomy 13:6-8 NIV)

While the Old Testament law prescribed severe measures for Israel as a covenant nation, the principle for believers today is clear: no relationship should lead us away from faithfulness to God. Jesus echoed this truth when He said, “Anyone who loves their father or mother more than me is not worthy of me.” (Matthew 10:37).

3. Dealing with a City That Falls into Apostasy (Deuteronomy 13:12-18)

Finally, Moses addressed entire communities that turned to false gods. Such cities had to be purged to preserve the holiness of God’s people. Allowing idolatry to spread unchecked would defile the entire nation.

Scripture: “You must certainly put to the sword all who live in that town. You are to destroy it completely, both its people and its livestock.” (Deuteronomy 13:15 NIV)

This reveals the seriousness of apostasy—it threatens to corrupt entire societies. Today, this reminds us as Christians to guard our communities—our families, churches, and even nations—from influences that normalize rebellion against God.

Conclusion

Deuteronomy 13 teaches us that apostasy is a cancer to true worship. Whether through false teachers, loved ones, or widespread cultural compromise, turning away from God must be dealt with firmly. Our ultimate loyalty belongs to God alone—He does not share His glory with another.

Take Action: Do not tolerate apostasy in your life. Stand firm in your faith, confront influences that pull you away from God, and commit to upholding true worship.
