News Story:
In a viral Q&A video shared on his official Facebook page, renowned preacher and wealth mentor Pastor Matthew Ashimolowo delivered a strong message on the dangers of keeping money idle in bank savings accounts — humorously calling them “shavings accounts.”
“Stop leaving your money in shavings account… The bank is shaving you and you thought they are helping you to save,” he declared, drawing laughter and deep reflection from his audience.
Pastor Ashimolowo explained that many Ghanaians are unknowingly losing value on their money due to poor financial awareness. “I can guarantee that the interest rate on your shavings account in Ghana is not more than five percent. Fifteen percent inflation. Interest rate on your money, five. Profit or loss? Loss!” he emphasized.
Using a practical example, he illustrated how inflation quietly erodes value: “When you left 10,000 cedis in January and it became maybe 300 cedis in December, you thought you gained — but what 10,000 bought in January, it won’t buy in December.”
He advised believers to develop financial intelligence through structured investments rather than passive saving. “The first thing to do is write your investment goals — what do you want to achieve? Then know your risk tolerance.”
Pastor Ashimolowo further noted that fear of risk keeps many people trapped in financial stagnation. “Some people put their money in shavings account because they cannot handle any risk. But high risk, high income; middle risk, middle income; low risk, low profit; and no risk, no gain. Life is about risk — just know your own risk tolerance.”
The celebrated preacher’s message serves as a wake-up call for Christians and professionals alike to pursue financial wisdom, embrace informed investing, and align their money decisions with sound biblical principles.
