In a powerful episode of Christian Conversations, Pastor Mensa Otabil, General Overseer of ICGC, cautioned believers against the growing practice of idolizing church altars instead of honoring Christ.
“What I see happening now for me borders on a very dangerous slip into idolatry,” he said.
He explained that altars in Scripture were places of sacrifice and remembrance, not mystical platforms for miracles. “We cannot particularize God to an individual, a church, or a location,” he warned. “There is no God of ICGC or God of Mensa Otabil. He’s the God of all believers.”
According to him, the altar is symbolic — a place pointing us to the finished work of Christ. “When we approach, we are approaching Him — not a platform or an altar,” he emphasized.
Pastor Otabil urged believers to stay rooted in the Word and resist trends that shift focus from Jesus to personalities.
“Anything that takes Christ out of the equation and replaces Him with human figures is no longer Christianity.”
