In a recent episode of Christian Conversations, Pastor Mensa Otabil addressed one of Christianity’s most misunderstood topics — whether a believer can be cursed.
“It is very difficult for us to imagine that a human being has the capacity to invoke a non-consequential effect on somebody,” he explained. “The person has done nothing, and you have the power to invoke a bad thing to happen to the person — what power do you have? Are you the creator of the human being?”
He emphasized that curses in Scripture are “consequences of actions,” not magical pronouncements. Referencing Genesis 3, he said, “Adam who sinned is not cursed; the earth is cursed. … God’s interest is not in the curse of man.”
Pastor Otabil encouraged believers to rest in Christ’s finished work: “Christ took our place … so that instead of the curse of the law becoming our lot, now the blessing is our lot.”
He urged Christians to reject fear of ancestral or spoken curses and walk boldly in their redemptive identity in Christ.
