“Salvation Is Not a Right—It Is Mercy”: Pastor Otabil Answers Tough Question on Other Religions

At The God Summit 2025, an audience member asked how people born into non-Christian nations can be saved if “all they know” is their religion. Pastor Mensa Otabil’s response was firm but compassionate.

He began by challenging the premise: “Salvation is not a right… If anything, you have a right to judgment because we all sin.”

He emphasized that God’s mercy—not human background—is the only basis for salvation. “All human beings are doomed. The end of all humans is the judgment of God… Salvation is based solely on what Christ has done for us.”

He illustrated this with a vivid analogy: “We are in a forest… The forest is burning. All the animals will die. The helicopter saving some does not mean the others were entitled to rescue.”

He insisted Christians must preach globally: “If we believe Christ is the only way, then we must announce Him.”

Addressing hidden believers in non-Christian cultures, he added, “Many have received Christ even though externally they seem to be non-Christians… The compelling force of the gospel is irresistible.”
