“We Saw Revival With Our Own Eyes”—Bishop Tackie-Yarboi Describes the GES Fire That Shaped a Generation

Before he became a presiding bishop, young Tackie-Yarboi was a seeker—chasing God from fellowship to fellowship in the late 70s and early 80s. He remembers Ghana Evangelical Society (GES) not just as a meeting place, but as a movement. “It was a kind of revival,” he said.

Tongue-speaking, falling under power, and exuberant worship were uncommon in Ghana’s traditional churches. But at GES, these manifestations burst forth. “It was not popular then… but God used Rev. Abuzu to start that fellowship,” he recalled.

GES rotated between venues like Beding Powell Hall and Legon Hall. “Sometimes you get there and they are having another program, so we move in between the two,” he said with humor.

He also absorbed teachings from Watchman Nee, whose writings shaped his humility and self-discipline. “He emphasizes that you must die to the self. That affected me a lot,” he explained. This formed the core of his leadership style—quiet strength without abrasiveness.

These formative years—GES, Youth for Christ, Bible House, and various prayer fellowships—created the spiritual culture that would later define Victory Bible Church International.
