Introduction
For many believers, reading the Bible feels challenging—but it should not be so. The Bible is the most valuable book on earth, written by God Himself to show us the way of salvation and to guide our daily walk with Him. No other book carries the same power to transform, renew, and strengthen the heart.
Yet when we neglect Scripture, our spiritual lives stagnate. We lose direction, clarity, and the joy that comes from walking closely with God. The good news? You can learn to read and enjoy your Bible deeply and meaningfully.
Here are five biblical ways to help you do exactly that.
1. Be Born Again — Spiritual Understanding Requires Spiritual Birth

The Bible is a spiritual book, and it takes a spiritual person to understand it fully. Paul teaches in 1 Corinthians 2 that “God reveals His truth to us through His Spirit.”
This means:
- You may study the Bible academically and still miss its spiritual meaning.
- True understanding comes only when the Holy Spirit opens your heart and mind.
- Being born again gives you the new nature required to grasp the things of God.
If someone has not yet turned from sin and believed in Christ, the Scriptures will feel dry, confusing, or distant. But when a person is born of the Spirit, the Bible becomes alive.
The first step to enjoying Scripture is to know its Author personally.
2. Pray Before You Read — Invite God Into the Process

Since all Scripture is inspired by God (2 Timothy 3:16), it makes sense to ask Him for help every time you read it.
Prayer prepares your heart. It settles your thoughts. It opens your mind.
Before reading, pray simple but sincere words like:
- “Lord, speak to me today.”
- “Give me understanding.”
- “Open my eyes to see what You are saying.”
Be honest. Be open. God delights in revealing His Word to those who ask.
3. Ask for Help — You Are Not Expected to Understand Everything Alone

James reminds us that “we do not have because we do not ask.” Understanding Scripture is no different. Here are three sources of help every believer should embrace:
a. Ask the Holy Spirit
He is the One who inspired the Scriptures and the One who teaches them.
Tell Him exactly what you need help with—clarity, wisdom, or understanding.
b. Ask mature believers
God often uses others to guide us. A simple explanation from a mature Christian can unlock a passage you have struggled with for years. Someone’s testimony about reading through the whole Bible can challenge and inspire you.
c. Ask through resources
Books, study guides, devotionals, videos, journals, and audio teachings all exist to help you enjoy Scripture more.
These tools do not replace the Bible—they enrich your understanding of it.
There is no reason to struggle in silence. Ask for help with humility.
4. Understand the Big Story of the Bible — The Master Key to Every Book

Difficulty in understanding Scripture often comes from not knowing where each book fits within the larger story.
The Bible is one grand narrative of God’s plan:
Creation → Fall → Redemption → Restoration
When you read the whole Bible—even slowly over a year or more—you begin to see:
- how Leviticus connects to Jesus,
- how the prophets point to redemption,
- how the New Testament fulfills the Old,
- and how every part fits into God’s big plan.
Once the big picture becomes clear, individual chapters and verses suddenly make sense and become enjoyable to read.
5. Read and Study the Bible Intentionally — There Is No Shortcut

Enjoyment comes from consistency.
To grow in your Bible reading:
- Choose a translation you understand.
- Follow a simple reading plan.
- Sit with a notebook and pen.
- Write what God shows you.
- Study further when something catches your attention.
There is no magic formula.
You simply take your Bible, create quiet time, and read it with expectation.
Over time, your desire increases. Your understanding deepens. Your joy grows.
Final Thoughts
The Bible is God’s love letter, wisdom book, and life manual for every believer. When you approach it prayerfully, humbly, and intentionally, you discover that Scripture is not difficult—it is delightful.
Make the decision today:
Open your Bible.
Invite the Holy Spirit to guide you.
Ask questions.
Learn the big story.
Study with purpose.
And watch your spiritual life flourish.
God bless you.
