Pastor Mensa Otabil has shed fresh theological light on Genesis 3:15, describing it as the very first announcement of the gospel in Scripture. Preaching from his sermon titled “Jesus the Messiah (Part 6): The Seed of the Woman,” the ICGC General Overseer explained that God revealed the plan of redemption immediately after the fall of man.
“This statement in Genesis chapter 3 verse 15 is usually called the proto-evangelium—the first good news,” Pastor Otabil stated. “In the midst of the bad news of the fall, God delivers good news.” He emphasized that redemption was not an afterthought but a divine strategy revealed at the dawn of human history.
Breaking the verse into parts, he explained that when God declared, “I will put enmity,” He was initiating a divinely imposed conflict. “God is literally saying, ‘The war has started, and it will continue,’” he said, adding that this warfare was a “fight unto death.”
According to Pastor Otabil, this conflict unfolds in three stages: first between the serpent and the woman, then between their respective seeds, and finally between a specific individual referred to as “He” and the serpent. “Somebody has come to replace Eve,” he explained. “And when He comes, He will fight in her place.”
He identified this individual as Jesus Christ, stressing that His mission was foretold thousands of years before His birth. “Out of the seed of the woman will come one who will bruise the head of the serpent,” he said, pointing to Christ’s ultimate victory over Satan.
