Introduction
What if the victory of Jesus Christ was announced before sin had fully unfolded? What if the cross was not God’s emergency response to the fall, but His original strategy? In a profound and theologically rich sermon titled “Jesus the Messiah (Part 6): The Seed of the Woman,” Pastor Mensa Otabil, General Overseer of the International Central Gospel Church (ICGC), takes believers back to the Garden of Eden to uncover the very first proclamation of the gospel.
Preaching from Genesis 3:15, Pastor Mensa Otabil reveals that immediately after Adam and Eve sinned, God did not abandon humanity to defeat. Instead, He announced a divine war plan that would culminate in the coming of Jesus Christ. This verse, often called the proto-evangelium—the first gospel—shows that redemption was already in motion before humanity even understood the depth of its fall.
With clarity, structure, and deep biblical insight, Pastor Mensa Otabil demonstrates that Christ’s victory over Satan was not accidental, delayed, or improvised. It was declared, designed, and destined from the very beginning.
Genesis 3:15 as the First Gospel Announcement
Pastor Mensa Otabil begins by establishing that Genesis 3:15 is not merely a curse pronounced on the serpent but the first clear declaration of salvation history. He explains that the term proto-evangelium comes from Greek words meaning “first” and “good news.”
In the middle of judgment and expulsion from Eden, God releases hope. The fall did not silence God’s redemptive voice. Instead, it amplified it. God speaks directly to the serpent and announces that what began in deception will end in defeat. Redemption, therefore, is revealed as intentional, not reactionary.
God Initiates a Permanent Spiritual Conflict
A major emphasis of the sermon is the phrase, “I will put enmity.” Pastor Mensa Otabil explains that this enmity is a God-imposed hostility—a state of warfare that cannot be negotiated or reconciled.
This conflict is not symbolic or temporary. It is a “fight unto death.” God ensures that evil and righteousness will never coexist peacefully. Any reconciliation would mean permanent bondage for humanity. By initiating the conflict Himself, God guarantees that the battle will reach a decisive and just conclusion. Satan does not control the terms of the war—God does.
The Three Levels of the Conflict
Pastor Mensa Otabil carefully breaks Genesis 3:15 into three progressive levels of warfare.
The first level is personal: between the serpent and the woman (Eve).
The second level is generational: between the seed of the serpent (evil powers and those who yield to them) and the seed of the woman (humanity).
The third and final level is messianic: between a specific individual referred to as “He” and the serpent.
At this final level, Eve is no longer the combatant. A new champion steps in to fight on her behalf—pointing clearly to the coming Messiah.
The Identity and Mission of “He”
The sermon reaches its climax as Pastor Mensa Otabil explains the phrase, “He shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise His heel.” He highlights the importance of the word bruise, which means to crush or strike down in battle.
The “head” represents authority, power, and command. The prophecy therefore declares that the coming Messiah will destroy Satan’s power at its source. Satan may strike back, but only at the heel—the lowest and most healable part. The damage inflicted on Christ would be real but not final.
This prophecy finds fulfillment in Jesus Christ. Through His death, Satan appeared victorious. Through the resurrection, Christ crushed Satan’s authority permanently.
Christ’s Victory and the Believer’s Freedom
Pastor Mensa Otabil reinforces this truth with New Testament scriptures such as 1 John 3:8, Hebrews 2:14–15, and Colossians 2:15. Christ destroyed the works of the devil, disarmed principalities and powers, and released humanity from lifelong bondage to fear and death.
The implication for believers is clear: Christians are not fighting for victory; they are standing in victory. Satan is defeated, and his power is broken.
Conclusion
This sermon powerfully reminds believers that the cross was not an interruption of God’s plan but its fulfillment. The battle that began in Eden was settled at Calvary. Jesus Christ, the Seed of the Woman, has crushed the head of the serpent once and for all.
Believers therefore live from a place of victory, freedom, and confidence. The enemy may deceive, intimidate, or harass, but he cannot reverse what Christ has already accomplished. The gospel did not begin in Matthew—it began in Genesis.
