Pastor Mensa Otabil has called Christians to refocus Christmas on its true spiritual foundation, describing it as “God’s intervention in human history,” not merely a festive date on the calendar. Speaking on Christian Conversations, he explained that the birth of Jesus Christ marks the beginning of humanity’s redemption story.
“The birth of Christ is what we call the incarnation—when God became man and visited us for the purpose of our salvation,” Pastor Otabil said. “Without the incarnation, there is no death and no resurrection.”
Addressing debates around the exact date of Christmas, he clarified that uncertainty about the date does not invalidate the event itself. “Jesus was born in real time and history. The lack of certainty about the date does not deny the reality of His birth,” he stated.
Pastor Otabil likened the situation to people who do not know their exact birth dates yet still celebrate life meaningfully. “We should celebrate the birth and what the birth means, not argue endlessly about dates.”
He emphasized that traditions surrounding Christmas vary across cultures but should always point back to Christ. “Traditions are shaped by location and history, but meaning must remain central.”
According to him, Christmas should remind believers that God stepped into humanity legitimately—through birth, not myth or apparition. “God became man in a biological, historical sense so salvation could take place,” he explained.
Pastor Otabil concluded that Christmas is not merely symbolic but foundational to Christian faith. “It is the moment God came to redeem mankind.”
