Pastor Mensa Otabil has described Christmas as the theological foundation upon which the entire Christian faith rests. In his Christmas conversation with Pastor Albert Ocran, he stated that the incarnation of Jesus Christ is indispensable to salvation.
“The incarnation is at the centre of the Christian faith,” Pastor Otabil said. “Without the birth of Christ, there is no death, and without His death, there is no resurrection.”
He explained that while the resurrection is pivotal, it is impossible without the incarnation. “The resurrection rests on the fact that Jesus was first born into human history,” he noted.
Pastor Otabil clarified that the early church initially focused more on celebrating Christ’s resurrection than His birth. “The resurrection registered very strongly with the disciples, so they celebrated it weekly,” he explained. “Christmas came later as the church reflected on the full story of redemption.”
He dismissed claims that Christmas is a pagan festival, stating plainly, “We do not celebrate Christmas to worship a pagan god. We worship the Christ of the Bible.”
Drawing comparisons, he explained that many everyday realities—such as days and months—carry pagan names without affecting Christian faith. “Calling today Tuesday does not make me an idol worshipper,” he said.
According to him, Christianity exists in real time, not isolation. “Jesus was born into a world already in motion,” he said, adding that coincidence with other celebrations does not diminish Christ’s birth.
Pastor Otabil urged believers to treat Christmas as sacred remembrance. “At the heart of Christmas is God giving Himself to humanity.”
