“Don’t Die in the Name of Ministry”: Rev. Dr. Philip Aryee Warns Young Pastors on Financial Responsibility

In a candid and thought-provoking Facebook post on Friday, December 19, 2025, Rev. Dr. Philip Aryee, founder of New Spring Church and Rehoboth City Church, addressed what he described as a growing crisis among young and associate pastors who expect the church to be solely responsible for their financial future.

Rev. Aryee observed that many ministers who entered full-time ministry in their early twenties are now in their fifties “bitter and disappointed in life” because they failed to plan beyond church support. He challenged the belief that churches should pay for every aspect of a pastor’s life, explaining that “the church might not be able to fully fund your entire lifestyle, so you might need an additional source of income.

According to him, church allowances alone cannot secure quality education for children, decent accommodation, or long-term financial stability. “The allowance you get from the church will not be able to take your children to good schools or give you a financial future, so you must wake up and do something,” he cautioned.

Rev. Aryee strongly rejected the idea that ministry and business are incompatible. “If you are not lazy and ignorant, you should be able to combine ministry and business,” he said, calling on churches and denominations to intentionally educate pastors on financial planning and entrepreneurship. He emphasized personal responsibility, adding, “You can’t blame your denomination for the state of your life. Your denomination doesn’t owe you anything. In fact, it gives you a brand advantage to make it.

Sharing a practical example, he spoke of a Ghanaian pastor successfully running a catfish business while thriving in ministry. “He supports his family, takes his children on vacation in Europe, and is still the biggest giver in his church,” Rev. Aryee noted, describing him as “one of the finest preachers we have in Ghana.

He concluded with a sobering warning: “Ministry and denomination must not destroy your life. It is never the will of God for your life to suffer in the name of ministry… Work hard, take care of your family, and don’t die in the name of ministry and denomination.
