Pastor Mensa Otabil has warned that it is possible for people to go through the Christmas season without truly celebrating Christ. Speaking candidly on Christian Conversations, he explained that cultural festivities often overshadow spiritual meaning.
“People may be celebrating something that is not Christmas,” he stated. “They may be celebrating the end of the year, but not the birth of Christ.”
He explained that Christmas coincides with end-of-year festivities, which can blur spiritual focus. “There were already celebrations in the Roman Empire during this period,” he said. “Christian celebration happened alongside them.”
Referencing Ghana’s popular “Dirty December” phenomenon, Pastor Otabil noted that not all December celebrations are Christ-centred. “It has a different import from the Christian celebration of Christmas, even though it happens at the same time.”
He stressed that believers must exercise discernment. “A Christian must decide which part of this season honours Christ and which part does not,” he said.
Pastor Otabil revealed why his church begins Christmas celebrations early. “We start from the first of November to deliberately centre people’s minds on Christ,” he explained. “This is God stepping into human history to redeem us from sin.”
He warned that without intentional teaching, Christmas could lose its meaning for future generations. However, he expressed confidence in the church’s role. “As long as the church continues to preach Christ, we will not lose the meaning of Christmas.”
He concluded by urging balance. “We should enjoy the season, but Christ must remain at the centre.”
