“Discipline Is the Difference”: Pastor Mensa Otabil Challenges Believers to Win the Fight of Life

At the final Sunday service of 2025 held on December 28 at ICGC Christ Temple East, Teshie–Accra, Pastor Mensa Otabil delivered a sobering charge on discipline as the key to progress in both spiritual and everyday life.

Reading from 1 Corinthians 9:25–27, Pastor Otabil described life as a continuous contest that requires intentional self-control. “Life is a fight,” he said plainly, adding, “Your greatest enemies are not witches and wizards… the one pushing you back is yourself.

Using Apostle Paul’s analogy of athletic training, he explained that discipline is self-imposed pressure designed to strengthen, not destroy. “I discipline my body and bring it into subjection,” he quoted, clarifying that discipline involves habits, routines, and consistency.

In one of the sermon’s most striking moments, he warned against digital distraction. “One of the biggest enemies of our lives today is the devil you call the phone,” he remarked, drawing laughter and reflection from the congregation. “If you spend all your time scrolling, you will get scrolls.

Pastor Otabil urged members to evaluate their past, present, and future as the year ends, encouraging them to define what they want 2026 to add to their lives. “That one year must add something to your life which you will carry into the next year,” he said.

His message concluded with a call to build predictable habits that make failure difficult and excellence inevitable—both in faith and in life.
