Pastor Mensa Otabil has offered a clear and uncompromising definition of what it truly means to be a Christian, separating genuine faith from cultural and political labels. Speaking on the Christian Conversations podcast, he stated, “At the fundamental level, a Christian is a person who acknowledges Jesus Christ as their only Lord and Saviour and commits to live by His precepts.”
According to him, Christianity has acquired many secondary meanings over time—national, cultural, and even political—but these must never replace its core. “There are extra definitions of Christian, but the fundamental one must always remain,” he explained.
Pastor Otabil emphasized that Christianity is anchored in God’s self-revelation through Jesus Christ. “If we want to see how God wants us to live, He demonstrates it Himself by becoming a man and living that life for us,” he said.
He noted that accepting Christ is not merely a religious identity but alignment with God’s universal plan for humanity. “When we look at Christ, we are looking at how life must be lived as God wants us to live it,” he added.
The discussion challenged believers to examine whether their Christianity is rooted in personal conviction or inherited identity, urging a return to authentic, Christ-centered faith.
