At International Palace Church, during a dialogue hosted by Rev. Dr. Bernard Mensa Adams, Mensa Otabil explained one of the most important lessons from the Garden of Eden — the power of God’s Word as the believer’s primary defense.
As the conversation progressed from the theme of Eden as the meeting place between heaven and earth, Pastor Otabil turned attention to the moment when humanity faced temptation in the garden.
He pointed out that Adam and Eve had only one protection against deception: God’s command.
“Their only defence is the word of God.”
According to Pastor Otabil, God’s instruction was already clear before the temptation occurred. The command not to eat from the forbidden tree served as a spiritual safeguard.
“Because the word of God is what protects them from this guy.”
However, when temptation came, Adam and Eve failed to rely on the Word that had already been given.
He explained that if they had simply repeated God’s instruction, they would have resisted the deception.
“They would just repeat, but He said, we must not touch it. That’s all.”
Pastor Otabil compared this to the example of Jesus in the wilderness, where Christ overcame Satan by repeatedly declaring Scripture.
The lesson, he emphasized, is timeless for believers seeking to live in God’s Kingdom.
“The most powerful way to function in the kingdom of God… is through the word of God.”
His explanation reframed the Eden story not merely as humanity’s failure but as a powerful illustration of the authority and protective power contained in God’s Word.
