“Churches Must Be Built to Last 1,000 Years” — Pastor Otabil Challenges Leaders at Doulos Conference

Pastor Mensa Otabil has called on church leaders across the world to rethink how ministries are built, urging them to prioritise long-term systems that ensure the Church survives for generations. Speaking during the opening session of Doulos Conference 2026 at ICGC Christ Temple East in Teshie-Accra, the respected teacher emphasised that churches must not be designed around personalities or short-term success.

“A church by its nature is a long-term project… supposed to last for a very long time, for 1,000 years and over,” he declared.

He contrasted the Church with corporate organisations and political empires, noting that most businesses collapse within decades, while historic churches have endured for centuries. This, he said, places a serious responsibility on today’s leaders to think beyond their own lifetime.

Pastor Otabil explained that building enduring ministries requires intentional governance structures and doctrinal clarity, rather than relying solely on charismatic leadership or personal influence. He warned that churches focused only on immediate growth or popularity may struggle to survive generational transitions.

The conference, which has attracted pastors, founders, and ministry workers from various countries, is focused on equipping leaders with practical strategies for sustaining vibrant churches. His remarks set the tone for deeper discussions on leadership systems, doctrine, and organisational longevity throughout the three-day gathering.
