LOB Events I http://www.livingourbible.com I Wednesday 25th March 2026
Introduction
At the Day 2 morning session of Doulos Conference 2026 at ICGC Christ Temple East, Teshie-Accra, Pastor Mensa Otabil delivered a sharp and insightful teaching on how pastors and believers must correctly interpret Scripture. Addressing a practical question from the previous session, he laid a strong foundation for biblical understanding, warning against careless interpretation that leads to doctrinal error.
The Bible Is for Us, But Not Written to Us
One of the most striking highlights of his teaching was his explanation of context in Scripture. “The Bible is written for us… but the Bible is not written to us,” he stated.
He explained that although Scripture speaks to believers today, it was originally written to specific people in a particular historical setting. Understanding this distinction, he said, is crucial to avoiding misinterpretation.
Understanding Context Before Application
Pastor Otabil illustrated how modern readers can misinterpret Scripture if they ignore original meaning. “Pick the verse, try to understand what it meant at the time it was spoken,” he advised.
He warned that without this process, believers can become “very sincerely wrong,” even while being passionate about Scripture.
The Danger of Personal Interpretation
Referencing historical movements, he cautioned against interpreting Scripture based solely on personal feelings. He explained that simply reading the Bible and applying it directly without study can lead to serious doctrinal errors.
The Need for Study and Depth
He encouraged pastors to go beyond surface reading by studying language, history, and context. This, he said, helps believers “peel all the layers” to arrive at the true meaning of Scripture.
Conclusion
Pastor Otabil’s teaching brought clarity and discipline to biblical interpretation, equipping leaders to handle Scripture with accuracy and responsibility. His message reinforced that correct understanding is essential for building strong, lasting ministries.
