In a bold challenge to modern church leadership trends, Pastor Mensa Otabil has urged ministry founders to move beyond personality-centred leadership toward sustainable organisational systems. Speaking at Doulos Conference 2026, he described many contemporary churches as “new and emerging,” regardless of their size or influence.
“Fifty years in the life of a church is very, very young… we are at the toddler stage,” he remarked.
He explained that while spiritual gifts and charismatic leadership may drive early growth, long-term impact requires institutional maturity. Leaders must intentionally develop governance frameworks, doctrinal clarity, and leadership pipelines that enable ministries to thrive for centuries.
Otabil expressed his vision that major church movements in Africa could endure for over a thousand years if they adopt strong governance systems. His comments resonated deeply with conference attendees who are navigating succession planning and organisational expansion.
As the Doulos Conference progresses, sessions on leadership development, ministry strategy, and networking continue to empower participants to rethink how they build and sustain their churches.
