Introduction
At the Day 2 morning session of Doulos Conference 2026 at ICGC Christ Temple East, Teshie-Accra, Pastor Ransford Obeng delivered a deeply practical teaching on building self-supporting churches that can function effectively beyond their founders. Continuing his theme, “What type of church are we building?”, he challenged leaders to develop systems that ensure sustainability and long-term impact.
Understanding a Self-Supporting Church
Pastor Obeng defined a self-supporting church beyond finances. “A self-supporting church is a church that can function… without depending on external support,” he explained.
He added that such a church must generate its own income and maintain its purpose without deviation, even after the founder is gone.
The Power of Structured Discipleship
He stressed the importance of intentional discipleship systems. “People should not just join a church… it’s wrong,” he stated, emphasising the need for structured membership and training processes.
According to him, every church must have a clear pathway for developing members spiritually and doctrinally.
Three Dimensions of Christian Growth
Pastor Obeng highlighted three essential growth areas: Bible knowledge, ministry involvement, and character development. “Every person that has received Christ need to grow in Bible knowledge,” he said.
He added that growth also comes through active service and personal transformation into Christ-like character.
Building Systems, Not Personalities
In a strong charge, he urged pastors to create structures that outlive them. “Build something that will outlive you,” he declared.
He emphasised empowering members through ministries, training, and leadership development, noting that “everybody… has a ministry” and must be equipped.
Conclusion
Pastor Obeng’s message reinforced the importance of systems, discipleship, and leadership development in building churches that last. His teaching provided a clear blueprint for pastors seeking sustainable ministry impact.
