4 Things My Mother-In-Law Taught Me About Life

On Tuesday 21st July 2020, my mother-in-law turned 63 years. I called her to pray for her and wish her well that it shall be well with her all the days of her life. I asked God for His manifold blessings and good health for her. A day to her birthday, in a conversation with her, she shared 4 simple lessons about life that were really profound. This is coming from a 63 year old woman who has seen life and living it. She has seen the good, the bad and the ugly sides of life.

These four lessons can really save all of us if we take them to heart and apply them.

#1. Time changes

I know you know this but not from a 63 year old sweet mother of three children. She said in her own lifetime, she has seen how things have changed for her. She used to be very strong and up and going but now things have changed.

Never think life will remain where it is now. Things will change. Time will change. People will change. Children will be born and they will grow. This lesson is important because when you are going through tough times of life, never think it is permanent. The Apostle Paul says they are light afflictions.

#2. Everyone’s flower will come up

Good one. She simply meant that whatever you have to showcase to the world will definitely be unearth if you stay faithful. The fact that you are working as a gardener does not mean you will remain there forever. You may be slated to become a CEO and that can happen if you stay consistent and work hard.

In the movie The Pursuit of Happyness, Chris Gardner, played by Will Smith, was broke, poor and homeless. But his flower was to become a broker so he worked so hard to achieve that feat to better the lot of his family. Don’t give up, your flower will come up.

#3. Do not be envious of other people

My mother-in-law’s next lesson was that we must not be envious of other people for what they have. If they can do it, you can do it too. It should rather inspire you to move on.

Envy can be very subtle and unnoticed. It’s not always that obvious. A clear indication may be that you think you deserve something better than the person who got it. Not always! Sometimes the person at the bottom of the class can become your employer or a decision maker to help you even though you were smarter academically than him or her. Such is life!

#4. Trust in the Lord

My mother-in-law said that trusting in the Lord is another lesson she has learnt in her 63 years on earth. God can answer all our prayers and cause us to triumph in life.

King Solomon wrote to encourage us to trust in the Lord with all our heart. Many times in life, the hardest thing to do is to trust in the Lord. Trust Him to come through for you.

Well, those are the four dear lessons I gleaned from my mother-in-law whilst we were chatting before her birthday. May you apply these simple truths to your life and experience the results.

Which of the lessons really connect with you? Share your thoughts.
