Introduction
Examinations are an essential part of life. They help us assess progress, identify weaknesses, and improve for the future.
Whether in academics, professional certifications, or life’s challenges, evaluations serve as stepping stones to growth. The same principle applies to our spiritual journey.
The Bible encourages believers to engage in self-examination to ensure we are walking in faith and growing in our relationship with God. Without regular spiritual assessments, we risk stagnation and complacency.
The Biblical Call to Self-Examination
The Apostle Paul emphasizes the importance of self-examination in 2 Corinthians 13:5:
"Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you—unless, of course, you fail the test?"
This call is not meant to discourage but to help believers recognize areas that need improvement. Just as schools issue report cards to track a student’s progress, God expects us to evaluate our spiritual growth regularly.
Jesus Himself set an example of spiritual examination in Revelation 2-3. He assessed the seven churches, commending their strengths and pointing out their weaknesses.
For instance, the church in Ephesus was praised for its perseverance, but Jesus warned them about losing their first love:
"Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken the love you had at first. Consider how far you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first." (Revelation 2:4-5)
This divine evaluation was not meant to condemn but to correct and guide them back to spiritual vitality.
The Importance of Daily Spiritual Reflection
To grow spiritually, believers must consistently reflect on their walk with God. Some key questions to ask include:
- Am I passionate about the things of God?
- Am I committed to serving Him?
- Is my love for God and others evident in my actions?
David understood the importance of self-examination and prayed in Psalm 139:23-24:
"Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting."
This prayer reflects a heart that desires correction and growth. Without honest self-reflection, it is easy to drift away from God’s purpose.
The Consequences of Neglecting Spiritual Growth
Many Christians remain stagnant for years, failing to deepen their relationship with God or make a meaningful impact in His kingdom.
This often happens because they do not take time to assess their spiritual state. However, the Bible urges believers to grow:
"But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be glory both now and forever! Amen." (2 Peter 3:18)
Spiritual growth requires intentional effort, honest evaluation, and a willingness to change. Just as students must study to improve their grades, Christians must engage in prayer, Bible study, and obedience to God’s Word to strengthen their faith.
Conclusion
Life is full of examinations, and our spiritual journey is no exception. Regular self-examination helps us stay aligned with God’s will, make necessary changes, and continue growing in faith.
Let us, like students preparing for an important test, diligently assess our spiritual progress, seeking God’s guidance and correction.
Only by acknowledging where we are can we take meaningful steps toward where God wants us to be.
