In today’s world of uncertainty, it’s easy to rely on our bank accounts, jobs, and plans for security. But what happens when all those things fall short? How do we trust God when we can’t see the way forward?
If you’ve ever asked yourself how to truly live by faith and trust in God, the story of George Müller offers an inspiring blueprint.
Müller was a 19th-century Christian evangelist and orphanage founder who made the bold choice to rely solely on God for all his needs—never asking people for money, and never going into debt.
In Chapter 5 of The Autobiography of George Müller, we see a powerful lesson in real-time faith. Here’s what we can learn.
1. Faith Means Trusting God Alone

“Throughout 1830, the Lord richly supplied all my temporal needs, although I could not depend upon any human for a single shilling.”
—George Müller
Müller chose to depend on no man—only on God. That meant he didn’t ask friends, churches, or patrons for help. It was just him, his prayers, and God.
And the result? God showed up—again and again.
“Even regarding temporal things, I had lost nothing by acting according to the dictates of my conscience.”
👉 Life application: Stop measuring your faith by how much support you get from others. Instead, ask yourself: Am I depending fully on God, or partly on man?
2. Faith Will Be Tested

“On the 6th, 7th, and 8th of January 1831, I repeatedly asked the Lord for money but received none.”
Müller experienced days of silence. No money. No breakthrough. Just waiting.
Have you been there?
“A few times I was tempted to distrust the Lord, although He had been so gracious to us.”
Even Müller—who had seen God provide countless times—felt the temptation to give up. But the key was what he did next.
“This trial lasted only a few minutes. He enabled me to trust in Him, and Satan was immediately defeated.”
Ten minutes later, God came through.
“A sister brought us two pounds four shillings… The Lord triumphed, and our faith was strengthened.”
👉 Life application: Trials test your faith, but they also grow it. If you’re in a season of waiting, don’t give up—God is faithful to deliver in His perfect time.
3. Faith Resists the Easy Way Out

Müller had access to an offering box where people donated money. He could’ve asked to receive that money regularly. But he didn’t.
“I explained to them that I desired to look neither to man nor the box but to God.”
Instead of reminding them weekly, he chose silence. Why?
“Lest it hinder the testimony I wished to give of trusting in God alone.”
👉 Life application: Faith sometimes means not taking the shortcut. Trusting God may look like silence when speaking up would be easier. But that silence can speak louder than words.
How You Can Start Living by Faith Today
1. Begin With Prayer-Fueled Trust
Start every decision by bringing it before God. Don’t rush to act—wait for His guidance.
2. Track Every Answer
Keep a journal of answered prayers, even the small ones. Let them serve as reminders when doubt creeps in.
3. Tell Your Testimony
Share how God provides for you. Your story will strengthen others—and remind you of God’s faithfulness.
4. Say No to Fear-Based Plans
When tempted to take matters into your own hands, pause. Ask: “Is this plan coming from fear—or from faith?”
Final Thoughts: Make This Your Story Too

“The Lord triumphed, and our faith was strengthened.”
—George Müller
George Müller’s faith wasn’t perfect, but it was persistent. He made the choice—again and again—to trust God completely.
You can too.
Whether you’re trusting God for provision, healing, direction, or peace, let Müller’s story fuel your faith. God is still the same, and His promises still stand.
