In a fiery sermon at Bible Life Ministries, Pastor Mensa Otabil, General Overseer of the International Central Gospel Church, challenged Christians to embrace wealth as a divine tool for influence, countering the notion that poverty is virtuous.
“Satan has an agenda to keep the church poor,” Pastor Otabil proclaimed. “He told Jesus, ‘All these kingdoms and their glory have been given to me, and I give them to whomever I wish.’ If the devil controls wealth, why would he fund the church to fight him?”
Drawing from biblical examples, Pastor Otabil highlighted that patriarchs like Abraham, Isaac, and Solomon were wealthy, while Jesus’ poverty was a sacrificial act—not a model for believers. “Jesus became poor so we might be rich. Claiming poverty after His sacrifice is arrogance,” he argued.
The pastor also dismissed criticisms against church spending, comparing megachurches to global luxury projects. “Why is it okay for a footballer to earn $100 million but wrong for a church to buy a sound system? The world celebrates wealth—except when it’s in the church.”
His message has resonated with many congregants, though critics argue it risks promoting materialism over spirituality.
