“Pharisaical Christianity Still Exists Today” — Pastor Otabil Warns Believers

During his sermon at ICGC Christ Temple East, Pastor Mensa Otabil warned that modern believers can unknowingly adopt the mindset of the Pharisees.

Preaching “Living the Kingdom Life – Pt. 2 (Who Can Get In?)” from Matthew 5:3, he described the Pharisees as “meticulous” and deeply committed to obeying the law, yet driven by self-righteousness.

“They believe… we are the ones doing it… the kingdom belongs to us,” he said, highlighting their reliance on personal merit.

Pastor Otabil explained that this mindset still exists today in subtle ways. “People equate spirituality to how long they pray… or what they do,” he noted.

He cautioned that such thinking contradicts Jesus’ teaching, which prioritizes humility over performance.

“The poor in spirit are the opposite of those with spiritual pride and self-sufficiency,” he stated.

The message urged believers to abandon pride and embrace dependence on God.
