ACCRA, Ghana — Renowned Ghanaian pastor and leadership mentor Dr. Mensa Otabil has challenged Christians to move beyond religious activities and embrace genuine transformation, warning that many people today are “in church but not in Christ.”

Speaking at The Next Great Leader Summit 3.0 hosted by Bishop Gideon Titi-Ofei at the University of Gold Coast in Accra, Dr. Otabil argued that true Christianity is not measured by church attendance, prayer, or Bible reading alone but by a radical transformation of character and worldview.

“Because we are in church, but we are not in Christ,” Dr. Otabil stated. “The church is a power construct, but we are not in Christ.” He explained that many believers faithfully engage in religious practices while failing to embrace the values and teachings of Jesus Christ.

According to him, Christianity should influence how people treat others, value human life, exercise leadership, and serve society. He stressed that faith is not merely about external behavior but about internal transformation.

“Repentance is a radical internal change that results in a radical external life,” he said.

Dr. Otabil further noted that Christians often focus on rituals because they are easier to practice than genuine transformation. “Having a form of religion is very easy, but having the mind of that religion, that worldview, means a very radical transformation,” he explained.

The respected church leader urged Christian leaders to become followers of Jesus rather than merely practitioners of religious routines.

“If you determine that you are going to do what Jesus says you should do, as hard as it is, you will be a good person,” he said.

The summit brought together young professionals, entrepreneurs, students, pastors, and emerging leaders to discuss practical leadership principles under the theme “360-Degree Leadership.”
