LOB Article I http://www.livingourbible.com I Monday 22nd June 2026
Introduction
The Bible is not merely a collection of ancient writings; it is God’s inspired revelation to humanity. Written over approximately 1,500 years by more than forty authors from different backgrounds, the Bible presents one unified story of God’s love, redemption, and purpose for mankind.
Many believers find the sixty-six books of the Bible intimidating because of their number and variety, yet when viewed as one grand narrative, the Bible becomes much easier to understand.
As renowned Bible teacher Warren Wiersbe once said, “The Bible is not a collection of isolated stories; it is one story of God’s plan of salvation through Jesus Christ.” Understanding the structure of the Bible helps believers read it with greater confidence and clarity.
The Old Testament: The Foundation of God’s Story
The Old Testament contains thirty-nine books and can be understood in five major sections. The Law (Genesis–Deuteronomy) introduces creation, humanity’s fall into sin, and God’s covenant with Israel through Moses. Genesis begins with the famous declaration, “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth” (Genesis 1:1), establishing God as Creator and Sovereign.
The Historical Books (Joshua–Esther) tell the story of Israel’s journey into the Promised Land, the rise and fall of kings, exile, and restoration. These books reveal God’s faithfulness even when His people were unfaithful.
The Poetry and Wisdom Books (Job–Song of Solomon) explore life’s deepest questions about suffering, worship, wisdom, love, and human purpose. Psalm 119:105 reminds believers that God’s Word is “a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”
The Major Prophets (Isaiah–Daniel) and Minor Prophets (Hosea–Malachi) contain messages of warning, repentance, hope, and future restoration. Though called “minor,” these prophets are equally important and point forward to the coming Messiah.

The New Testament: The Fulfillment of God’s Promise
The New Testament contains twenty-seven books and centers on Jesus Christ and His Church. The Gospels (Matthew–John) tell the story of Jesus’ birth, ministry, death, and resurrection. John summarizes their purpose by saying, “These are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ” (John 20:31).
The Book of Acts records the birth and expansion of the early Church through the power of the Holy Spirit. It demonstrates how ordinary believers transformed their world through faith and obedience.
The Epistles (Romans–Jude) are letters written to churches and individuals, providing instruction on Christian doctrine, character, leadership, and practical living. Through these letters, believers learn how to apply the Gospel to everyday life.
The final book, Revelation, reveals Christ’s ultimate victory over evil and God’s eternal kingdom. It assures believers that history is moving toward God’s glorious conclusion. As Billy Graham observed, “I’ve read the last page of the Bible; it’s all going to turn out all right.”
A Simple Way to Remember the Bible
One helpful summary is this: Genesis tells us how everything began, the Gospels tell us how salvation came, Acts shows how the Church started, the Epistles explain how Christians should live, and Revelation shows how everything ends. From beginning to end, the Bible points to Jesus Christ. As Jesus declared, “They are they which testify of me” (John 5:39).
Conclusion
The sixty-six books of the Bible may seem overwhelming at first, but together they form one beautiful story of creation, fall, redemption, and restoration.
Every book contributes to God’s unfolding plan and reveals His character, wisdom, and love. As believers grow in understanding the structure of Scripture, they gain greater confidence in reading, studying, and applying God’s Word.
The Bible is not merely a book to be admired; it is a guide to be followed, a truth to be believed, and a message that transforms lives.
