Teshie, Accra — Rev. Dr. Nevers Sekwila Mumba has reflected on one of the greatest disappointments of his public life, revealing how losing Zambia’s presidential election became part of God’s preparation for a greater purpose.
Speaking during a Sunday service at ICGC Christ Temple East, Teshie-Accra, Rev. Dr. Mumba recounted contesting the presidency in 2001, believing his popularity as an evangelist would translate into electoral victory.
“I was sure because I was a man of God… I was sure that I was going to win the election.”
However, the election results told a different story.
“When the election results came out, it appeared like somebody had messed around with the numbers because I did not win.”
He admitted questioning God during that difficult season before receiving life-changing encouragement from Bishop T.D. Jakes in the United States.
According to Rev. Dr. Mumba, Bishop Jakes placed his arm around him and said, “My brother, you are walking what we call forbidden waters. Don’t quit. But I ask you to write a book because that book may not be popular now, but it will be popular in future as you are breaking the ground for the first time for all of us.”
That advice eventually resulted in his book, In Pursuit of Freedom, Faith and Politics, which took 15 years to complete. Rev. Dr. Mumba said the experience taught him that apparent setbacks can become foundations for future influence and ministry.
