Pastor Mensa Otabil has issued a strong call to Christians to rethink their relationship with church, insisting that true faith begins with a personal connection to Christ, not mere attendance.
Speaking during his sermon titled “The 2:42 Church – Added (Part 3)”, he emphasized that the early church never focused on building crowds but on transforming lives through salvation.
“The first way to be added in the early church is to be added to the Lord,” he declared. “Before you join a church, you must join Christ.”
He cautioned against a growing trend where people enjoy church experiences without genuine spiritual transformation. “People come to church… they love the music… they love the lights… but their hearts are not connected to Jesus Christ,” he said.
Referencing Acts 2:41 and Acts 5:14, Pastor Otabil explained that the early believers were first united with Christ before becoming part of a community. According to him, salvation—not social belonging—is the foundation of authentic Christianity.
He further challenged churchgoers to examine their faith: “Are you just a church member or a Christ member?”
The renowned preacher stressed that without salvation, church membership is incomplete. “If you are not saved… then the second addition will not take place,” he added.
His message comes as churches globally grapple with declining spiritual depth despite growing attendance, prompting renewed focus on discipleship and authentic Christian living.
