“Church Is Not a Social Club — It Is a Call to Serve,” Otabil Declares

Pastor Mensa Otabil has challenged Christians to abandon passive church attendance and embrace active service, describing service as the true mark of belonging in the body of Christ.

Delivering a powerful message at Christ Temple East, he emphasized that early Christians understood church membership as a commitment to serve, not just to attend.

“Church membership is about service to the Lord Jesus Christ,” he said. “Why are you here in church? I’m here to serve.”

He painted a vivid picture of the early church, where joining the faith came with real risks. “If you come to join this group, you may lose your life… you could be killed tomorrow,” he noted, highlighting the depth of commitment required.

Contrasting that with modern Christianity, Otabil warned that many believers have reduced church to comfort and convenience. “It’s not just about attending something,” he said. “You come because you say, I want to do something for Jesus Christ.”

The General Overseer stressed that service is a natural response to salvation. “He has saved me… now I have to respond, and I respond with service,” he explained.

He urged believers to rethink their priorities and rediscover the original purpose of the church, which centers on devotion, sacrifice, and impact.

His message resonated strongly with congregants, calling for a shift from spectatorship to participation in building a vibrant Christian community.
