Church leader says believers should learn to identify the genuine rather than obsess over counterfeits

Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams has spoken strongly in defense of the prophetic ministry, warning Christians against dismissing genuine prophetic gifts because of abuses and controversies surrounding some prophets.

Addressing worshippers during the Miracle Service 2026 UK Edition, the Archbishop acknowledged the concerns many people have about modern prophetic practices but insisted that the biblical office of the prophet remains vital to the Church.

“We hear the good, the bad and the ugly about them. But I also believe that there is the original and there is the counterfeit,” he said.

Using the example of bank workers who are trained to recognize genuine currency, Duncan-Williams argued that Christians should focus on learning the authentic rather than becoming preoccupied with identifying fakes.

“What we need to do is not to talk about the counterfeit but teach people to know the original to the extent that when you see the counterfeit you can tell,” he stated.

The Archbishop recounted a prophetic experience from 1978 when a young man publicly declared that God would remove Ghana’s then Head of State from office. According to him, the prophecy was fulfilled within weeks, leaving a lasting impression on his understanding of the prophetic.

He maintained that prophets remain among the gifts Christ has given to equip the Church, alongside apostles, pastors, teachers, and evangelists.

His remarks are likely to reignite conversations about discernment, accountability, and the role of prophetic ministry in contemporary Christianity.
