In a significant moment for church leadership across the globe, Pastor Mensa Otabil, Founder and General Overseer of the International Central Gospel Church (ICGC), officially launched his latest book Leading the Church during a virtual event that attracted pastors, ministry leaders, and church stakeholders.
Describing the book as a critical resource, Pastor Otabil stated, “I want to introduce a new resource that I think would be beneficial to pastors and churches… it is a church governance guide for new and emerging churches.” He explained that “new and emerging churches” are not merely defined by age but by their inability to transition leadership beyond a dominant founder.
The globally respected preacher emphasized that governance, not charisma, determines longevity in ministry. “If you want to build a church that lasts… the most important thing is going to be how the church is governed,” he declared, stressing that decisions made today will shape churches for “the next hundred years… even 300 years.”
Drawing from over 2,000 years of church history, the book explores governance systems including episcopal, presbyterian, and congregational models, while allowing leaders flexibility. “There is no perfect way of governing a church… there are models we can learn from,” he noted.
Pastor Otabil encouraged collaborative study of the book, saying, “The best way to benefit from this is not just to read it as one person, but read it as a group.”
He concluded with a powerful vision: “Churches are built to last… 500 years from now… what we are doing today will still be there because we put in place the right governance system.”
