“You Don’t Earn the Kingdom — You Receive It”: Pastor Mensa Otabil Reveals the Shocking Truth About Who Gets In

LOB Sermon Reviews I http://www.livingourbible.com I Monday 4th May 2026

Introduction

On Sunday, May 3, 2026, at ICGC Christ Temple East, Pastor Mensa Otabil delivered a profound and thought-provoking message titled “Living the Kingdom Life – Pt. 2 (Who Can Get In?)”, based on Matthew 5:3.

In this sermon, he unpacked the first Beatitude—“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven”—challenging deeply rooted assumptions about spirituality, success, and access to God’s kingdom.

From the onset, he made it clear that Jesus’ teachings in the Beatitudes are “counterintuitive,” overturning human expectations and redefining what it truly means to be blessed.

The Counterintuitive Nature of the Kingdom

According to Pastor Otabil, Jesus deliberately highlights attitudes and people society often overlooks or even despises. “He takes conditions that are associated with weakness or failure, and he turns them around as winning attitudes,” he explained.

This reversal is central to understanding the kingdom of God. While the world celebrates strength, achievement, and visible success, Jesus declares that the truly blessed are those who appear weak—specifically, the “poor in spirit.”

What Does It Mean to Be “Blessed”?

Pastor Otabil broke down the meaning of the word “blessed,” explaining that it is far deeper than common interpretations. It means to be favoured by God, to enjoy life to the full, and to have a good and prosperous outcome.

Importantly, this blessing is not self-generated or earned through human effort. It is entirely conferred by God. “We don’t bless ourselves… it is from God,” he emphasized.

Who Are the “Poor in Spirit”?

At the heart of the message was a powerful explanation of what it means to be “poor in spirit.” These are individuals who recognize their spiritual bankruptcy—those who understand that, on their own, they have nothing to offer God.

“They are aware of their own spiritual bankruptcy… I have nothing to merit God’s favour,” he said.

This stands in stark contrast to the Pharisees, who represented religious perfection and strict obedience to the law. Yet, Jesus bypasses them and instead declares that the kingdom belongs to those who humbly acknowledge their need for God.

The Danger of Spiritual Self-Sufficiency

One of the most striking parts of the sermon was the warning against performance-based Christianity. Pastor Otabil explained that many believers today unknowingly adopt a Pharisaical mindset—believing that prayer length, good works, or church attendance earn them favor with God.

“You don’t get the kingdom by your effort… it’s not about scoring points,” he declared.

He stressed that salvation and access to God are entirely dependent on Christ. “The only thing that qualifies me… is God having mercy on me through Jesus Christ.”

Seeing Life Through the Right Lens

Using the analogy of a telescope, Pastor Otabil illustrated how Jesus changes our perspective. Just as a telescope can distort or clarify vision depending on how it is used, Jesus “turns the telescope around” so that we see life correctly—from God’s viewpoint.

This means embracing a kingdom mindset where humility, not pride, becomes the gateway to blessing and divine access.

Conclusion

Pastor Mensa Otabil’s message was a powerful reminder that the kingdom of God is not earned through human effort but received through humility and faith in Christ. By redefining what it means to be blessed and who truly qualifies, he called believers to abandon self-sufficiency and embrace total dependence on God.

In a world driven by achievement and performance, the message of the Beatitudes stands as a radical invitation: come empty, and receive everything.
