ACCRA, GHANA: Archbishop Dr. Charles Agyinasare has called on African Christian leaders to combine spiritual power with character, biblical discernment and accountability, warning against charismatic ministry driven by spectacle, dependency and self-promotion.
The Founder and Prelate of Perez Chapel International made the call during The Bible in the Pan-African Imagination, a symposium engaging the legacy and future of Pastor Mensa Otabil’s Beyond the Rivers of Ethiopia: A Biblical Revelation on God’s Purpose for the Black Race.
Held from August 10–11, 2026, at ICGC Christ Temple East, Accra, the symposium was a collaboration between Central University’s Daniel Institute and the Alliance for Black Pentecostal Scholarship, USA.
Presenting on “Leadership Influence in the Operation of the Pneumatological Gifts in the African Church,” Agyinasare argued that leaders significantly influence how spiritual gifts are practised, interpreted and safeguarded.
“A pan-African theology of the Spirit must, therefore, join power to character, demonstration to discernment, and charismatic freedom to accountable stewardship,” he said.
He stressed that spiritual gifts must serve the Church rather than elevate personalities.
“Gifts are therefore not private trophies, but graces entrusted for the common good,” he stated, adding that “spiritual power may operate through leadership, but it does not belong to leadership.”
Drawing on decades of evangelistic and healing ministry, Agyinasare also called for responsible handling of miracle testimonies.
“Claims should not outrun the verification,” he cautioned. “Offerings should never be tied to promises of healing.”
Concluding, he declared: “Africa’s pneumatological future will not be secured by spectacle, imported scepticism, or unaccountable charisma, but by power joined to holiness and leadership submitted to Christ.”
