Introduction
Pastor Mensa Otabil, Founder and General Overseer of the International Central Gospel Church (ICGC), has challenged Christians to reject fear and confront spiritual warfare from the position of Christ’s victory.
Preaching on “Kingdom Warfare” at the Maximum Impact Conference 2026, organised by Powerhouse Ministry International in Accra on Friday, August 14, Pastor Otabil traced the biblical conflict between light and darkness from Genesis to Revelation. His central message was clear: darkness is real, but it cannot overcome the light believers receive through Jesus Christ and God’s Word.
Darkness Is Real, But God Is Present
Beginning with Genesis 1:1–5, Pastor Otabil noted that darkness covered the face of the deep while the Spirit of God was also present.
For him, this reveals an important truth for Christians facing difficult circumstances: the presence of darkness does not mean the absence of God.
“There is no darkness in life that can prevent the Spirit of God from moving.”
He explained that God confronted the darkness by speaking: “Let there be light.” Therefore, believers must understand the central place of God’s Word in overcoming darkness.
“The only thing that is the carrier of light is the Word of God,” he said. “If you want to overcome the darkness, you have to go for the light.”

Jesus Is the Greater Light; Believers Reflect His Light
Drawing from Genesis 1:16–18, Pastor Otabil used the sun and moon to illustrate the relationship between Christ and believers. Just as the moon does not generate its own light but reflects the sun, Christians overcome darkness by remaining connected to Christ.
“Jesus is the light of the world; He originates light,” he explained. “The believers are not originators of light.”
This, he stressed, changes the believer’s understanding of spiritual warfare.
“We don’t win spiritual warfare because we have power. We win spiritual warfare because we are connected to Jesus Christ.”
Fasting, prayer and other spiritual disciplines, therefore, should not become attempts to manufacture personal spiritual power but means of deepening fellowship with Christ.
Stop Being Afraid of Demonic Powers
Pastor Otabil addressed what he described as a deep-seated fear of demonic powers among many Christians. Using Jesus’ encounters with demons in the Gospels, he observed that Christ never approached demonic activity with panic or uncertainty.
Instead, the demons feared, protested and acknowledged His authority.
“If this is how the greater light behaves, then we who are the lesser light, that is how it should be with us too,” he said.
He urged Christians not to reverse the biblical order by becoming terrified of curses, dreams, rituals or threats of spiritual attack.

“You cannot be the loser in spiritual warfare. You are the winner in spiritual warfare.”
Master Jesus and Build Your Faith on the Word
Pastor Otabil encouraged believers to study Matthew, Mark, Luke and John repeatedly until the life, words and example of Christ become deeply established in their hearts.
“You have to read Jesus until Jesus settles in your heart,” he said, stressing that Christian confidence must be grounded in biblical knowledge rather than fear or mere religious excitement.
He further urged Christians to study the entire biblical story, noting that Scripture begins with light overcoming darkness in Genesis and ends with the complete triumph of God’s light in Revelation.
Conclusion: Walk in Christ’s Victory
Concluding the message, Pastor Otabil declared that believers must approach spiritual battles knowing that their victory is rooted in Jesus Christ.
“Jesus is the victory,” he declared. “The people who sit in darkness have seen a great light.”
He encouraged Christians to reject fear, remain connected to Christ, fill their hearts with Scripture and confidently reflect His light wherever darkness appears.
“You are not Goliath. You are David,” he declared. “You are bringing giants down, but no giant can bring you down.”
